M. D. Anderson Receives $35 Gift for Cancer Prevention May 15, 2008 The Dan L. Duncan Family Foundation has given The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center $35 million—the institution’s largest gift to the cancer prevention program and its second-largest gift in its 67-year history. The funds will be used to establish the Dan Duncan Family Institute for Cancer Prevention and Risk Assessment. The Duncan family’s generosity will enable M. D. Anderson to study the incidence and determinants of cancer in medically underserved and minority communities. A major element of the Duncan Family Institute will address cancer-related behavioral and genetic risk factors in medically underserved communities to better develop cancer prevention strategies and ultimately reduce cancer-related deaths in this rapidly growing segment of our population. The gift also will allow M. D. Anderson to recruit additional researchers and clinicians to implement new or enhance current...

BioHouston Resource Center (BRC)

THE BIOHOUSTON RESOURCE CENTER Start-ups today need to generate data demonstrating the commercial potential of their products to access significant funding sources. More than ever, start-ups need access to facilities and resources to develop their projects and generate data to get to the next funding event. Without accessible facilities, start-up companies expend scarce resources on leasing and building out laboratory space, purchasing furniture and equipment, and busying themselves with starting up and managing a life science lab. Located one mile south of the Texas Medical Center, the BioHouston Resource Center (BRC) makes it easier and more affordable for start-up companies to walk into the lab and get to work producing data, by providing access to wet lab bench space, shared equipment, and the offices and tools that start-up companies need. The BioHouston Resource Center is constantly seeking lab equipment, materials, and monetary donations. If you would like to donate...

Technology Transfer Luncheon

Technology Transfer LuncheonWith more than 40 institutions in the Texas Medical Center and the many additional academic, healthcare and research institutions in the region performing more than $1.4 billion in research annually, discoveries of exciting new technologies happen all the time.

The technology transfer office at each institution is the first step towards commercialization of these discoveries. To facilitate interaction between these offices and the investors and life science companies in our region, we host these monthly luncheons.

At each luncheon, a topic of discussion is chosen, and each institution will bring one or more technologies from that arena to review with the group. It may just be an early-stage discovery that has exciting potential, or it may be a patented process ready for licensing. Either way, this is a great opportunity to be in on the ground floor as the discoveries of today become the life-saving products of tomorrow.

Past Meeting Topics:

Biomarkers

Anti-infective Therapeutic and Prophylactic Vaccines

Micro-/Nanoarrays and Medical Devices, including Combination Devices

Michael E. Debakey Life Science Award

The Michael E. DeBakey Award is given each year to the undiscovered life science company with the highest potential to commercialize an important product at the annual Texas Life Science Conference. The first DeBakey Award was given to ThromboVision, Inc. in 2006. Dr. DeBakey’s rich history in Houston and the Texas Medical Center, along with his pioneering spirit, truly embodies the qualities that we are seeking in future recipients of this award. Some of Dr. DeBakey’s most renowned contributions include the concept of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH units), performing the first successful artificial heart transplant, playing an instrumental role in the development of the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) and being the first to successfully implant the device into a human. Additionally, he has served as consultant to almost every U.S. President in this century and received many prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest...
