This is another installment of FMDIC's wildly popular series of education forums on the medical device Quality System Regulation (QSR) mandated by Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 820 (21 CFR 820). We will post the agenda and speakers very soon.

The goal of the workshop is to present information that will enable manufacturers and regulated industry to better comply with the Medical Device QSR. The following topics will be discussed at the workshop:

standards and guidance
risk management in design
risk management in execution
risk management and post market surveillance

Join us on April^9th for the BioHouston Chili Cook-Off! The Chili Cook-Off is a day of fun in the sun, full of prizes and everyone's favorite--CHILI! The fun will begin at noon and run until 5 PM.

Our Chili Cook-Off is more than just chili - it brings the attendees together as a life science community. Get cooking and come out to support the Houston-area life science community by entering one or more teams from your company or research institution for the cook-off. Start soliciting your team members today!

Last year's attendance of more than 500 attendees and over 30 chili teams are sure to be eclipsed, so mark you calendars and prepare for the big event!

This is the sign-up page for Chili Teams only! After you have signed up your team here, we will contact you to obtain your team member’s names. We will then issue you an invoice for the charge for your team member participation. Chili Team Registration is first come, first serve--don't wait to register!

You may simply give us a number of participants to start (we need to know how many promotional items to order), but we will need your team member names by March 31st.

Opportunity Houston and CenterPoint Energy will again have a booth at the BIO 2010 show in Chicago. Booth participants will include local Economic Development Organizations, Technology Transfer Offices, and Houston Biotech Companies. Our goal is to highlight Houston as a premier location for biotechnology and the life sciences.

We will have ample space for your literature and limited meeting space within the booth. There will be NO cost to participate in the booth for one person from each of our local companies. We have a limited number of badges for the booth so they will be offered on a first come bases. All participants will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin is honored to be hosting the 2010 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting on October 6-9, 2010 in
Austin! The meeting will be held at the Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin, within blocks of Austin's famous music venues. The meeting in 2010 is projected to be one of the largest for BMES, and certainly one of the most informative in terms of scientific
sessions and professional networking. There will be several new features at the 2010 meeting, including a "Meet-the-Faculty-Candidates" poster session on Wednesday
afternoon just before the meeting starts (mark your calendars!) and a special keynote speakers session featuring several leaders in the field who will speculate on the future of Biomedical Engineering.

The Friday night event is sure to be a memorable one! The event will take place at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, which is located near the Texas State Capitol Building and The University of Texas at Austin. The museum houses 33,000 square feet of interactive exhibits that detail the history of this unique state. All attendees at the event are encouraged to visit the Texas Spirit Theater to experience a thrilling journey as Texas history comes to life. The unbelievable technology of the Texas Spirit Theater creates an astonishing adventure.

Featuring three stages, theater sets and an amazing array of special effects, the theater offers a one-of-a-kind experience that will leave you breathless. We plan to have Texas-style fajitas and BBQ, Austin's famous Amy's ice cream, live Austin music, and some special surprises (did someone say "Longhorn"?).

The upcoming BioHouston annual luncheon, Bringing Research to Life, will feature the new Texas A&M President, Dr. Elsa Murano, as our speaker. Research, particularly in the rapidly expanding life sciences, is the cornerstone in Texas A&M’s quest to become a top-10 public institution by 2020. The impact of this aggressive initiative by the Aggies is far-reaching, as well as critical in expanding the intellectual capital of the state.

Dr. Murano began her professorial career in 1990 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Preventative Medicine at Iowa State, the position she held prior to joining the Texas A&M faculty. She received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from Florida International University, and earned both a master's degree in anaerobic microbiology and a doctorate in food science and technology from Virginia Tech. Dr. Murano is the first woman and first Hispanic-American to lead the oldest public institution of higher learning in Texas—now one of the largest teaching and research universities in the nation.

Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit BioHouston’s initiatives to build the region’s biotech industry, creating medical breakthroughs that will transform health care, improve lives, and create economic growth.
